Which cement is best for house construction?

Cement is a binder, and substance used for construction that sets, hardens, adheres to the other materials to bind them together. Cement is one of the main construction materials as it acts as a connector between every brick.

When a person decides to construct his/her house, the first thought that comes to the mind is which brand of cement should be used to construct the house. Now the answer is very simple. It’s never the brand that influences the house construction. It’s always the cement’s type and grade which influences the house construction. The type and grade of cement should be selected carefully as per the house’s requirement. Site of the house, micro-climate, soil, type of foundation, the setting time needed are the main factors while selecting the cement.

The brand is never a major factor while choosing cement for house construction. All brands are good and manufactured as per Indian standards. A person constructing a house should never go for the brand as there is no such best brand. It’s always a top-selling brand.

Therefore, while selecting cement for house construction, factors that should be considered are site, micro-climate, soil, type of foundation & setting time needed.

Cement is basically of two types:

•          Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)

•          Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC)

Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is the most used cement while construction and it’s widely popular. Ordinary Portland Cement takes less setting time and is used where less setting time is needed. It comes in three grades – Grade 33, Grade 43, Grade 53. The grade is the strength of the cement. By grade, anyone can know the strength of the cement. The selection of the grade of cement depends on the strength required in the construction.  Grade 33 and Grade 43 are very old grades of OPC and it’s replaced by Grade 53.  Grade 33 is used for general construction work under normal environmental conditions. Grade 43 is used for plain concrete and plastering works. Grade 53 is used for heavy construction like bridges, towers, etc.  In total, grade 33 or grade 43 is best for house construction (residential projects). If needed or want, use grade 53 for RCC structures like footing, column, beam, and slabs, as initial and ultimate strength is the major structural requirement.

Portland Pozzolana Cement is little budget friendly cement as compared to OPC. It acts as a better resistant to chemicals and facilitates workability. At the same time, PPC is very durable and is recommended for general construction, and also for Masonry, Plaster, Tiling works as initial strength not being a prime factor of performance in this application. The only “cons” of PPC is that it has a higher setting time as compared to OPC. In total, PPC not only reduces the construction cost but also improves the quality of the structure due to its durability.
